our midwife, Christiane McCloskey, gave us this helpful tool to keep track of the pregnancy week by week. after our first appointment, we feel a real connection and trust her. if we end up staying in Brooklyn (still nothing to report), we look forward to her guiding us through the pregnancy as well as delivering our baby.
you may be wondering why we've chosen a midwife instead of an ob-gyn. a midwife is a certified nurse who can write prescriptions and oversee all the checkups along the way. midwives do everything possible to help you give birth naturally and not wind up in a situation where a C-section is likely, while ob-gyns have much higher C-section rates.
some people think midwives only do home-births, but Christiane is registered to deliver at Long Island College Hospital, the hospital nearest to us. we are definitely not giving birth in our living room! she would be able to perform the whole delivery unless complications (for example breech birth) arise, in which case we would be turned over to a doctor.
another reason we're choosing this path is that when you work with a midwife, she is guaranteed to be present at delivery. if we chose a regular ob-gyn, there's no way to know if they'd be on call the day we go into labor, therefore a doctor we never met would be the one to deliver.
