this documentary by Ricki Lake was very educational and eye-opening. it follows several women through the process of actually giving birth, focusing mainly on couples who have chosen to use midwives instead of ob-gyns. (the filmmakers take a very pro-midwife perspective.)
watching it gave us a sense of what we can expect for our own experience, and what are some possible issues to watch out for. it details how some common medical interventions during delivery can set off a chain of events that lead almost inevitably to a C-section - both because certain drugs make it more difficult for women to push the baby under their own control, and because hospitals don't want women to occupy beds for more than a certain amount of time which is often less than the amount of time labor requires.
